So many of you are always curious as to why I switch lenses so frequently while shooting.  This here is a perfect example of what different lenses give you.  The top image is taken with my 70-200mm “Portrait” lens.  It compresses and creates a softer look between my subject and the background.  It’s my “go to” lens with almost every client I work with at some point.

My 17-40mm is a wider- angled lens.  This means I can stand closer to my subject and still get a very wide perspective.  It tends to make my sunsets look a little more dramatic but you have to be careful because it can distort towards the edges if you are not careful, so you have to be aware of the position of your subjects.

Do you have a preference?

Agreed Wheaton. But so many of our clients prefer the more “dramatic” feel of a wider lens. The 70-200 is softer for sure.

I prefer your 70-200mm compression better- Just like you said it creates more distance between subject and background.
